Structure of Labor Cost in the Philippines (Second part of a series)

Payment for normal/regular working time accounted for 86.4% of total annual direct wages and salaries in 2013

  • The annual direct wages and salaries per employee borne by employers in employing workers in agricultural and non-agricultural establishments with 20 or more workers in 2013 amounted to P200,936. (Table 1)
  • Among the sub-cost components of direct wages and salaries, payment for normal/regular working time accounted for the biggest share at 86.4%. (Figure 1)

Agriculture, forestry and fishing had the highest frequency rate of cases of occupational injuries with wordays lost in 2011 and 2013

  • The frequency rate of cases of occupational injuries with workdays lost in 2013 was posted at 2.03, lower by 0.31 percentage point than the 2.34 frequency rate in 2011. This means that in both years there were only two cases of occupational injuries with workdays lost per 1,000,000 employee-hours of exposure. (Table 1)
  • By category of incapacity, temporary incapacity cases recorded a frequency rate of 1.99 in 2013, lower by 0.30 percentage point than the 2.29 rate in 2011.

  • Employment growth in large enterprises in Metro Manila remained positive in the third quarter of 2015. (Table 2)

Superficial injuries and open wounds were the most common types of occupational injuries in 2011 and 2013

  • From among occupational injuries that resulted to lost workdays for workers in various establishments nationwide, superficial injuries and open wounds were the mostly suffered occupational injuries by the majority of workers in both 2011 and 2013. (Figure 1)
  • For 2013, the said type of occupational injury accounted for more than three-fifths (61.7%) of the total 20,702 cases with workdays lost. This share was higher by 7.7 percentage points compared to 54.0% in 2011.
  • Specifically, this type of occupational injury was prevalent in agriculture, forestry and fishing (75.2%) in 2011, and in professional, scientific and technical activities (74.8%) in 2013. (Table 1)

Labor cost reached P1,065.7 billion in 2013

  • In 2013, the labor cost was posted at P1,065.7 billion. (Figure 1)
  • Expectedly, direct wages and salaries accounted for the biggest share of the total labor cost at 78.68%.
  • Bonuses and gratuities accounted for about one-tenth (9.45%) of the total cost, followed by social security expenditures at 8.67%.
  • The rest of the components had insignificant shares ranging from 0.15% to 1.04%.
